What is Risk?
It is difficult for each of us to understand where we are in the overall risk assessment for heart attack or stroke.
Large population studies such as the Framingham study take into account many risk factors and compute what each individuals risk of experiencing a heart attack or stroke is over the next ten years.
A simple model to understand risk is to imagine a blindfolded person crossing US 41 in the middle of the afternoon has a high risk of being hit by a moving vehicle whereas the same person crossing the same road at 3 am has a much lower risk of being hit.
Our goal is to reduce each patients risk by therapy and life style changes. We know that by lowering the level of bad (LDL) and elevating the levels of good (HDL) cholesterol, major modification of each patients risk is possible.
Raising the level of good cholesterol 1mg decreases the risk of heart attack by 6%. Lowering the level of bad cholesterol (LDL) by 20 mg reduces the risk of heart attack by 50%.
Similar reduction is achieved reducing the risk of stroke.
